Neurologic music therapy

Steps in the right direction

"Neurologic music therapy (NMT) is based on neuroscientific models music perception and music production and the influence of music on changes in non-musical brain and behaviour function" (Thaut,McIntosh & Hoemburg, 2014, The handbook of neurologic music therapy, pp.2).

This service is suitable for those looking to;

  • reduce verbal stutters and improve speech rehabilitation

  • physical rehabilitation centred around daily living activities (walking, fine and gross motor co-ordination, reaching, grasping, etc),

  • improve cognitive functioning (especially in areas of cognitive deficit resulting from stroke, neurodegenerative disorders and traumatic brain injury

Neurologic music therapy is a set of twenty clinically proven techniques that use the distributed nature of neurologic musical functioning to help re-wire the brain. To put it simply, because there is no "musical centre" of your brain, music can be used to help rewire your brain after it has sustained an injury. This may be as simple as somebody with Parkinsons disease using a click track (or metronome) to aid and improve their walking or helping somebody who has had a stroke regain the ability to talk through singing (there-by re-wiring their speech centre).

Neurologic music therapy is at the cutting edge of new music therapy theory and practice. If you or a loved one has a neurologic disorder or suffered from a stroke or traumatic brain injury, neurologic music therapy may be able to help you regain some of the faculties that have been affected and help you to live your best life!
